How to avoid viruses, trojans and malwares?
If you want to stay away from computer viruses, malware (trojans, spyware, adware…), which can destroy your data or become very annoying (popups) and even block or redirect certain popular sites, here is some tips.
Do not open any email attachments
unless you know specifically what the attachment is. Your friend forwarding you an email may not be fully aware of what is packaged along with it. The attachment may be bundled with a computer virus or other harmful malware
Enable Windows Updates
Download and install the newest updates automatically. To configure Windows Vista to install updates automatically, click the Start button > All Programs > Windows Update > Change Settings > Install Updates Automatically. Use the drop down menu to select the time to install new updates.
Try Alternative browser than Internet Explorer
Instead of Internet explorer use Firefox, Opera, or Google Chrome. Hackers are more likely to attack Internet Explorer because it is the most popular browser and the highest amount of people would be affected
Disable images in Outlook
The receipt of an email with infected graphics can cause a virus. Newer versions of Outlook automatically disable image previews but you can disable them by going to Tools > Trust Center > Automatic Downloads tab.
UseĀ anti-virus software
Free anti-virus software, such as AVG Antivirus, is available to download online. Be sure to update it frequently
Avoid using file sharing programs.
These programs allow you access to millions of other computer users’ files. Internet users with malicious intentions often attach malware to downloadable files. Music files such as mp3 or wav files are popular targets by those who wish to prevent the practice of “stealing” music.
Install free firewall
use firewall software, which can be downloaded online. Newer versions of Windows come with a firewall but it may not be turned on.
